The proposed tax cut goes to the floor of the state House today where Republican
unity will be tested. Some more moderate lawmakers appear to be responding to
educators in their districts who stand opposed to even the modest reduction in
state income taxes.
Governor Fallin, Speaker Shannon and Senate President Pro-Tem Brian Bingman
agreed to an income tax reduction to take into effect in 2015. The rate
reduction, while delayed, would take it from 5.25% down to 5%. The rate would
then fall to 4.85% the following year if the state meets revenue projections.
In addition, some lawmakers now complain they have been cut out of the budgeting process. State Reps. Jeff Hickman and Mike Reynolds joined Democrats in complaining about the budgeting process in an Associated Press article last week.
The Senate has already approved the tax cut, and it would head to the Governor’s
office if it passes the House today. The tax cut is expected to be approved in
the House, but with a handful of Republicans standing opposed.
