The U.S. House of Representatives voted today in favor of approving the northern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline project, with Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) speaking on the House Floor in favor of the bill.
The House adopted the measure, H.R. 3, by a vote of 241-175.
“The Keystone XL pipeline is extremely important to this country and to the 2nd District and I was pleased to be on the House Floor talking about its impact in my district,” Mullin said. “Since the beginning of my term I have called on the President to permit the northern leg of the project, but he continues to drag his feet. Today’s vote in the House shows how much support there is for this project.”
Mullin cited the fact that the Keystone XL project is a private sector investment into America’s economy that will also reduce our dependence on oil from countries that do not have America’s best interests at heart.
“When I toured the construction site in March, I met a number of workers and many from the 2nd District,” he said. “Highly skilled men and women are making a good living working on this project. If the northern leg is approved, that would mean even more jobs for Americans.”
With the 830,000 barrels per day of oil that will travel through the pipeline, the United States can significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and continue to create jobs for the nation’s energy sector.
Mullin said the economic impact of the pipeline’s construction through the 2nd District has been significant.
“Construction of the southern leg of the pipeline is ongoing through our district and it is bringing in about $5 million per month in both construction costs and spending by the workers,” he said. “For small communities in our district, that is a tremendous jump in revenues.”
