Freda Deskin Wants Respect

Dr. Freda Deskin sent this email today to the news media:

We respectfully request as you continue to report accurate and fair information regarding the election of the new State Superintendent of Public Instruction, that you allow Democrat candidate Freda Deskin the same respect as her opponent John Cox in their short descriptors.

Recently in various articles, Freda Deskin has been referred to as “Charter school founder” and “Dean” whereas John Cox has been referred to as a “lifelong educator.” Freda Deskin is beginning her 44th year dedicated and working in Oklahoma schools as John Cox is beginning his 29th.

Please know members of the Deskin campaign are thoroughly appreciative of Oklahoma’s media sources and grateful for your understanding. In addition, as the Aug. 26 primary run-off approaches there will be many events you may be interested in attending. The Deskin campaign will keep you notified of events for your consideration.

Negative primary campaign AND now thin skin – bad combination.
Negative run-off campaign too? – probably.

  2. Dawn, 03 July, 2014

Dawn Jones: Actually, Freda is the only Dem candidate who did not participate in negative campaign tactics.

  3. Vernon Woods, 03 July, 2014

Wrong – she ran a negative TV ad against only Baressi(GOP) during the primary, which made no sense – unless it was a prelim for more negative things to come.

Actually, if one looks at the biographical information carefully, Deskin has the most experience in education at several levels. Her campaign has been positive, focusing on what she sees is the needs in Oklahoma. She has not gained as much funds as her opponent, but she is running a good campaign. Compared to her primary opponent and the Republican candidate, she looks much better overall. She is not likely to be highly partisan in the Supt. of Education job, but likely to work with all interested parties to improve education in Oklahoma – a real need.

This is as good a place to ask these questions again:
What is the difference between the ‘Superintendent of Education’ (elected) and the ‘Secretary of Education’ (appointed)?
    Why do we need both?
How much money does the SoE make, and for what?
    Happy 4th!

  6. Edmond Voter, 07 July, 2014

Cheryl: In my humble opinion, the Secy of Education is a waste of money. That is the “cabinet position” that the Governor appoints and pays with tax dollars. Just like many other cabinet positions, the governor appoints big money people or someone to push their agenda.

In reality the governor should be working with the other statewide elected officials on these issues. It would certainly make more sense and save lots of money instead of all of these duplicate positions that work on the same issues as the elected official.
