House Faces 1,219 Bills, 26 JRs

At the end of today’s legislation filing deadline, there were 1,219 bills and 26 joint resolutions filed in the Oklahoma House of Representatives for the First Session of the 55th Legislature.

“After months of meeting with constituents and studying issues in House committees, members have filed their bills and are ready to begin the debate about how we move Oklahoma forward,” said House Speaker Jeffrey W. Hickman, R-Fairview.  “The House of Representatives stands ready to ensure Oklahoma remains on the path of economic growth by upholding the conservative values of the citizens of our great state.”

Last year, the House Chief Clerk’s Office reported that 1,197 bills and 23 joint resolutions were filed in the Oklahoma House of Representatives for the 2014 legislative session.

The House will reconvene on Feb 2 at noon.

As of 10 A.M., 23 Jan. the House web site shows a total of 1230 bills, many of which are ‘shell bills’ with no real content. These shell bills allow proposals to be submitted at any time with content that can escape public notice. Such bills should not be allowed! It appears that there are far more shell bills now than in previous years. Also, news reports state that the House now will allow bills to be filed at any time during the session; if true, that will make it very difficult for the public to follow legislation and take action to oppose or support such bills. Each year recently the Legislature appears to get worse in changing rules willy-nilly and wasting time on unnecessary bills.

As usual, there are bills in both houses based on ideology that waste time and funds. These bills are very likely unconstitutional and usually fail at some point, but they keep coming. Examples are SB 48, SB 665, SB 650, HB 1537, and Sally Kerns bills attacking LBGT persons.
