House Joint Resolution 1093, would would reject pay raises for statewide elected officials and judges, passed the House Rules Committee today by a vote of 11-0.
The resolution is sponsored by House Speaker Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, House Democratic Leader Scott Inman, D-Del City, President Pro Tem Senator Brian Bingman, R-Sapulpa , and Senate Democratic Leader Sean Burrage, D-Claremore.
The salaries of statewide elected officials are tied to the salaries of state judges by Oklahoma law. The Board on Judicial Compensation approves pay raises for judges, which may then be disapproved by the state legislature. If the Legislature does not vote to disapprove the pay raises this session, they will automatically go into effect in 2014.
Inman said, “I am pleased to see the progress we have made in denying these untimely pay increases. This is not the time to be doling out $350,000 in raises for statewide elected officials when state employees have not received a raise in almost six years. Most of these officials already make well over $100,000 each.”
