Attorney General Requests Stay of All Oklahoma Executions

In the wake of the stay of execution of Richard Glossip, Attorney General Scott Pruitt requested an indefinite stay for the rest of the state’s scheduled executions. Pruitt made the request to the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Thursday.

“The state owes it to the people of Oklahoma to ensure that, on their behalf, it can properly and lawfully administer the sentence of death imposed by juries for the most heinous crimes. Not until shortly before the scheduled execution did the Department of Corrections notify my office that it did not obtain the necessary drugs to carry out the execution in accordance with the protocol. Until my office knows more about these circumstances and gains confidence that DOC can carry out executions in accordance with the execution protocol, I am asking the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to issue an indefinite stay of all scheduled executions,” said Pruitt.

Benjamin Cole is the next convicted murderer scheduled to be executed by the State of Oklahoma. Cole’s execution is scheduled to October 7. John Grant’s execution is supposed to take place on October 28. There are 49 people total on Oklahoma’s Death Row.

The attorney general’s office has an inquiry into the events surrounding Glossip’s execution.
