Wesselhoft Encouraged by OU Student Congress Resolution on Nazi Era Artwork

wesselhoftRep. Paul Wesselhoft is encouraged by the University of Oklahoma’s Student Government Association Undergraduate Congress passed a resolution asking for the provenance research to be verified for all paintings at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Specifically, the painting “Shepherd Bringing in Sheep.” The resolution echoes a similar resolution passed by the House earlier this year.

Leone Meyer claims the painting was stolen from her father by the Nazi’s during World War II. Part of the resolution declares that if any works are found they were acquired through Nazi-Era looting, that the Fred Jones Museum follow the established guidelines set by the Association of Art Museum Directors to resolve the matter with the claimant.

Wesselhoft believe the resolution could help encourage OU President David Boren to respond.

“This resolution represents a paradigm shift when the student government demands that its university be on the right and moral side of history,” said Wesselhoft, R-Moore. “Now, that the student congress is involved in this controversy, expect a change in direction from President David Boren and his administration.”
