More Calls For Action On Earthquakes From Morrissette

More charges from Rep. Richard Morrissette that Governor Fallin and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission did not act fast enough in response to earthquakes which were likely caused by saltwater injection wells. The Oklahoma City House member held a hearing which was part information session, part citizens airing concerns.

“They knew, or at the very least strongly suspected, that there was a direct connection between saltwater disposal wells and the increasing incidence of earthquakes in this state,” said Morrissette.

Recently, Fallin released more than a million dollars in emergency fund to address the increased seismicity and find ways to address injection wells with the oil and gas industry. The wells are how production companies dispose of the water which comes up with oil and natural gas once they are separated. The water has a high salt content which makes it hard to use or clean.

Morrissette said the action is too little, too late.

The latest response from the governor and the commission “is akin to closing the barn door after the horses have escaped,” Morrissette claimed. “They should completely shut down operations at all 590 disposal wells that are sited in seismically active areas rather than merely reducing the volumes of wastewater they can accept.”
