Hofmeister Testifies About Local Education Control to Congressional Subcommittee

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister used her opening marks before a U.S. House subcommittee to outline the benefits states will realize now that Congress has passed the Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA). That legislation replaces No Child Left Behind.

Hofmeister told the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, the passage of ESSA came just in time for Oklahoma.

“Passage of this new law could not have come at a better time to give us the flexibility and authority needed to achieve these goals. Because of the additional flexibility provided by the Every Student Succeeds Act, we in Oklahoma can now develop programs and systems that align with our vision to meet the needs of our schools and every child in those schools,” said Hofmeister.

She explained how Oklahoma struggled to keep the goals of No Child Left Behind, but by giving the state and local governments control they have the flexibility to address student needs.
