Department of Rehabilitation Director Steps Down

After some controversy over his choice for superintendent of the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee, Department of Rehabilitation Services Director Joe Cordova has resigned.

The superintendent, Christine Boone, also has been released from her position at the school.

Concerns were raised bt parents about Boone’s appointment to the position. They caught the ear of Rep. George Faught who then brought the matter to Governor Fallin’s attention.

“I am pleased to see that Governor Fallin and the commissioners heeded the input from the Oklahoma School for the Blind families and the blind community. I and other state lawmakers sent a letter to the governor bringing attention to some of the controversies surrounding the school and recent hiring decisions. We hoped that the governor would take steps to resolve the controversy, allowing the school to move forward. I am thankful that she and the commissioners are looking out for the students and families at the school. I am optimistic that the decisions made for the future of the Oklahoma School for the Blind will be in the best interest of the students, parents, staff, and blind community as a whole.”

Noel Tyler, one of the Department of Rehabilitation Services administrators, has been appointed interim director after the Commission for Rehabilitation Services accepted Cordova’s resignation this week.
