Video: Hickman Chides Senate Over Education Standards Resolution

Today was the final day the Legislature could make changes to the new Oklahoma Education Standards which take the place of Common Core standards wiped out in Oklahoma two years ago.

While both the House and Senate passed resolutions mostly approving the standards, the House resolution would have taken things a bit further. House Joint Resolution 1070 would have given the Oklahoma Board of Education the power to make changes to the standards before putting them into place for the next academic school year.

The Senate adjourned before considering the resolution, which disappointed and irritated House Republicans.

The law which pushed out Common Core and gave the Legislature a time limit to make changes before the new standards went into place. Without the Senate’s approval of HJR 1070, they go into place.

That move disappointed House Speaker Jeff Hickman. He held a press conference to voice his concern about the Oklahoma Education Standards going forward. You can watch that press conference below.
