Alcohol Question Heads To Ballot

Oklahomans For Consumer Freedom

SJR 68 passed off the floor of the House of Representatives 64-30. This legislation does not require the Governor’s signature and its final passage today places alcohol modernization on the ballot in November.

“We applaud the state legislature for heading consumers’ call for increased choice and convenience when it comes to beer and wine,” said Tyler Moore, spokesperson for Oklahomans for Consumer Freedom. “A legislative solution was always our top priority and now we can shift our focus to getting out the vote in November. We’ll be regrouping with our coalition partners in the coming days to formulate a formal campaign rollout.”

Oklahoma is one of only five states that still requires grocery stores to sell 3.2 percent beer. Under the state’s antiquated laws, Oklahomans can’t buy wine at the grocery store or cold, regular beer in any retail store.

A strong majority of Oklahomans is ready for modernization of Oklahoma alcohol laws. In a poll conducted by Cole Hargrave Snodgrass and Associates, Inc., 65 percent of registered voters (an all-time high) want to update Oklahoma’s liquor laws.
