Primary Election Profile: Congressional District 5

Primary Election Profile: Oklahoma Congressional District 5

The Republican incumbent might be a war hero, but he is facing a challenger from his own party. Three Democrats have lined up in an attempt to win their party’s nomination. The rise of the Libertarian Party in Oklahoma continues with a lone candidate from that party challenging for the CD 5 seat.

The Democrats – Tom Guild, Al McAffrey and Leona Leonard

Guild is a lawyer who has run for the seat two times before. He faced Republican James Lankford who won the seat in 2012. He lost in the primary runoff to McAffrey in 2014. Guild calls himself a good-government progressive.

A former state Senator, McAffrey is running again for the Democratic nomination. His first loss as a politician came at the hands of Republican Steve Russell who is the current seat holder. He has made it clear he wants to work in a bi-partisan fashion if elected to Congress.

Leonard also ran for the Democratic nomination for the CD 5 seat in 2014. She has been the Seminole County Democratic Party Chairwoman. Her Facebook page indicates she wants to be a voice of the people.

The Republicans – Steve Russell and Frank Volpe

Russell is running for reelection. He’s known for serving with distinction in Iraq during Desert Storm. He also served in the Oklahoma Senate. During his time in Congress, Russell has championed cutting wasteful federal program and highlighting some of the problems through his Waste Book.

Volpe is a retired Navy Commander who has a wife and six children. He has served as an independent consultant for the Department of Defense and various businesses. Volpe is running as an “anti-establishment” candidate.

The Libertarian – Zachary Knight

Knight will face the winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries in November. He is a long time Libertarian who has been part of the campaign to get access to Oklahoma’s ballots for the Libertarian Party.
