Morrissette Continues to Pursue Oil and Gas Wastewater Issues

Term limits are not stopping Rep. Richard Morrissette from continuing his quest to explore the culpability of the oil and gas industry in the increased seismicity in Oklahoma. His request for an interim study on the disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production. Injection wells, used to dispose of the wastewater, have been connected to Oklahoma’s growing number and strength of earthquakes.

The House Committee on Energy and Natural Resources will hold the interim study later this year.

“This is a critical public policy issue,” he said. “Although oil and gas exploration in Oklahoma has slowed considerably in recent years, it hasn’t stopped entirely, and we can anticipate another uptick at some point in the future.”

Morrissette wants to explore alternatives to injection wells. The process is more expensive but would separate the brine and salts from the water.
