‘Oklahoma Tap Liberation Day’ To Celebrate Senate Bill 424

As Senate Bill 424 becomes the law of the land on August 26, local brewers across Oklahoma will hold a simultaneous toast to commemorate its enactment. At 4:24 pm on Friday, consumers will raise a pint of full-strength beer for the first time since statehood. The celebration is being called “Oklahoma Tap Liberation Day.”

Several events are planned as the craft brewery industry has begun to take hold in the state. The passage of SB 424 allows the breweries to sell pints, bottles, cans and growlers (jugs of beer) of strong beer directly to consumers.

The ABLE Commission almost stopped these celebrations when it asked for an Attorney General’s opinion on the law. The ABLE Commission’s director contended the language was unclear as to whether it allowed for the sale of pints in brewery taprooms. AG Scott Pruitt’s opinion was issued Tuesday and stated that the law allows brewers to sell their beer on site.

Senator Brian Crain and Representatives Cory Williams and Emily Virgin crafted the bill.

According to the Oklahoma Brewers Association, the state’s 14 craft breweries produce 34, 381 barrels of beer a year providing a $416 million economic impact in Oklahoma. Allowing the breweries to sell strong beer directly to consumers is expected to boost the industry.
