SD47 Candidate Judy Mullen Hopper Focuses On Greg Treat’s Record

Citing last week’s report that Oklahoma leads the nation in cuts in per-pupil spending for education, State Senate District 47 candidate Judy Mullen Hopper charged that incumbent Senator Greg Treat bears much of the responsibility for Oklahoma’s educational and budget crises.

“Educators pleaded with Senator Treat to do the responsible thing for our children’s future. Instead, he helped craft a disastrous budget that shortchanges education, vital state services, and low-income families, while preserving tax loopholes for large corporations,” she said. “Now we’re facing another budget hole and the prospect of our education system deteriorating even further.

Hopper, who taught special education students for 35 years, is among the “education coalition” group of current and retired educators who decided to run for public office in an effort to redirect state priorities. Running as a Democrat, she has received the endorsement of Sally’s List, AFL-CIO, AFT Oklahoma, and The Oklahoma Education Association in her bid to unseat Treat, who has never before faced a general election opponent in District 47.

Treat has declined to appear with Hopper and other candidates in two previous public forums devoted to Oklahoma’s education crisis. “I am calling on Senator Treat to join me in a public debate about what we must do about our state’s most serious issue: How do we adequately fund education and secure Oklahoma’s future?” she said.

Hopper has reserved space for the education debate at the Patience S. Latting Northwest Library at 5600 N.W. 122nd Street on Tuesday, November 1, at 7 p.m.
