GOP Leader Asks ‘Mr. Whetsel’ To Suspend Himself

Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Daren Ward is calling for “Mr. Whetsel” to suspend himself as Oklahoma County Sheriff.

Said Ward:

In response to the latest investigative audit requested by the Oklahoma County District Attorney and conducted by the Office of the State Auditor Gary Jones, we ask the Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel to immediately suspend himself pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

An officer of the law accused of wrongdoing is typically suspended during an investigation as a matter of due process. An elected official and AN officer of the law, should be held to the same standard.

Last week’s audit highlighted possible violations such as:

Failure to perform his constitutional duty to administer the jail and oversee the health and well-being of inmates.
And multiple violations of the County Budgeting Act.
Questionable gifts and vehicles worth more than a hundred thousand dollars.

I call on Mr. Whetsel to immediately suspend himself pending the outcome of the investigation.

If Mr. Whetsel fails to do so, I call on the Oklahoma County Board of Commissioner to initiate proper proceedings to afford Mr. Whetsel his right to due process and suspend Mr. Whetsel from office pending the outcome of this ongoing investigation.

This morning at the Board of County Commissioners meeting, two citizens asked them to suspend Sheriff Whetsel. Since Whetsel hasn’t voluntarily suspended himself, the Commissioners have that ability under current law. The commissioners are placing an item on their next meeting on November 2, 2016 to discuss suspending the sheriff for the crimes the State Auditor and Inspector presented in his investigative audit to the local DA, crimes that Whetsel admitted to committing on the front page of The Oklahoman.
