State School Board Approves First Rural Charter School in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s first rural charter school was approved by the State Board of Education Thursday. The move has received praise from school choice advocates.

The Academy of Seminole won the approval. Advance Rural Education was the group which led the effort to get the charter school approved.

ChoiceMatters President Robert Ruiz said he is excited for the families in the Seminole area and it is just a first step in a broader movement to support educational choices in rural Oklahoma.

“Families in Oklahoma City and Tulsa have been benefiting from a wide variety of educational options – including public schools, private schools, charter schools and virtual schools – for a long time,” said Ruiz. “Getting these same options to communities outside of our largest metro areas is essential to creating more opportunities, more jobs and more prosperity in rural Oklahoma. This is a major first step, and I think we will see many more similar developments in the near future.”

Lawmakers passed a measure to allow for charter schools in rural areas during the 2015 session.

Wonderful advance for education in areas outside the big metro areas. Let’s hope we get some more like it.
