Ricks Endorses Christian for Oklahoma County Sheriff

By Jason Doyle Oden

Another sign that former Representative Mike Christian is getting momentum for his campaign to replace Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel comes as Edmond Police Chief Bob Ricks endorsed him for the job. Ricks also joins Christian’s campaign as Honorary Chair.

“Having the support of a law enforcement legend like Bob Ricks is an indescribable honor,” said Christian. “His confidence in my ability to lead the Sheriff’s office and solve the jail crisis is a humbling thing.”

Ricks retired from the Edmond Police Department earlier this month. He was working for the FBI when the Murrah Building Bombing occurred in 1995. He was also the Oklahoma Secretary of Safety and Security under Governor Frank Keating. He’s played a role in the Drug Enforcement Administration and was Oklahoma Homeland Security Director.

“I’ve been blessed with a long and rewarding career in law enforcement,” said Ricks. “Over many decades, I learned how important it is for law enforcement agencies to have strong and competent leadership. Mike Christian is a solid leader with decades of law enforcement experience who will bring needed reforms to the Sheriff’s office. Mike has worked for me as a State Trooper, where I saw his character, his work ethic, and his commitment to public service. I am thrilled to be supporting his efforts to earn the trust of voters as the next Sheriff of Oklahoma County.”

Christian said he hopes to benefit from Chief Ricks’ counsel not just during the campaign.

“Chief Ricks is a tremendous leader with invaluable experience leading various law enforcement agencies,” said Christian. “If I’m fortunate enough to be elected Sheriff, I hope to benefit from his wisdom and guidance in that capacity as well.”

Last week, several legislative leaders backed Christian for Oklahoma County Sheriff. He’s also raised more than $76,000 in a week’s time for the campaign.

Whetsel announced his retirement earlier this year. Christian ran against Whetsel for Sheriff in a close race during the regular General Election last year.

The primary for the Sheriff’s race is April 4.
