Oklahoma County Black Elected Officials College Fair Set for August 26

The fourth annual Oklahoma County Black Elected Officials College Fair will be held Saturday, August 26 at the Metro Technology Centers’ Business Conference Center in Oklahoma City.

More than 50 universities, organizations and every branch of the military will be at the fair, and Metro Technology Centers will have experts on hand to speak with students about professional licensing and career paths.

“Education is the gateway out of poverty. I appreciate the elected officials coming together to support our youth’s ability to gain access to a great college education,” said Rep. Jason Lowe.

The event will highlight college affordability, scholarship options and other career opportunities for students not necessarily interested in a traditional university. Students in both middle and high school are encouraged to attend.

“As a criminal defense attorney, I’ve seen first-hand how the lack of education negatively affects our community. It is a powerful statement when we as elected officials promote and encourage our students to attend college while providing them with the tools to be successful, and the college fair provides just that,” Lowe said.

Several breakout sessions are available at the college fair, and experts are expected to discuss test-taking skills, how to apply for college and how students can attend college tuition-free with the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship.

“We recognize that everyone may not be college-bound,” said event organizer and former Rep. Mike Shelton. “But the truth is, there’s something at this college fair for everyone. The sooner these students and their families start planning for life after high school, the better prepared everyone will be for the financial obligations.”

The Black Elected Officials College Fair has grown over the years and now hosts colleges from across the country as well as every in-state institution.

“This event represents the possibilities for our community to encourage our young people to access the pathway to higher education. I commend Mike Shelton for his continued effort to make this a reality, and I pledge my commitment to keep it going,” said Rep. George Young.

The college fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 26 in the Business Conference Center at Metro Technology Centers, 1900 Springlake Drive in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma County’s Black Elected Officials is sponsoring the event in partnership with the University of Central Oklahoma, Perry Publishing and Broadcasting, and Metro Technology Centers.
