Mullin: Protecting Life at Every Stage

By Congressman Markwayne Mullin

Children are one of God’s greatest gifts.  They are the future of our communities.  The next generation will carry on our family farms, take over our small businesses, or take care of us when we get old.

When it comes to protecting the lives of children, we have a moral obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

I will always believe that every life is sacred.  No child should ever be aborted because that life is unique and created in the very Image of God.  I am reminded of this every day when I look at my own children.

Christie and I have become advocates for adoptive and foster parents, having adopted two beautiful daughters ourselves.  I cannot imagine them not being a part of our family, because I believe with all of my heart that it was always in God’s plan for them to be a part of our family.  God’s plan is greater than all of us and I know he has an incredible plan for every child born each day.

This week in the House, we voted on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which makes abortion illegal after 20 weeks of conception.  It makes this extreme abortion a criminal act nationwide.  If the bill passes in the Senate, millions of innocent lives will be spared each year.

I am sickened that we have to have this debate at all.  This shouldn’t be a partisan issue, because it’s a moral one.  The lives of the unborn are sacred.  The Lord told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”  We should treat these innocent lives with the same dignity and respect that God asks us to have for one another.

Ultimately, our goal is to reverse the Roe v. Wade decision because every life is precious and every child is created in the image of God.  For now, this is a step in the right direction.  I will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves because I believe we have the moral obligation to do so.
