Libertarian Party to Hold Closed Primaries Next Year

The Libertarian Party of Oklahoma will hold a closed primary when voters go to the polls to nominate party candidates for governor next year. The Libertarians have been openly debating whether to keep their primaries open or to close them to the more than 4,000 registered Libertarians in Oklahoma. The party’s executive committee decided the matter by a 5-3 vote.

Libertarians have three candidates from which to choose. Chris Powell, Rex Lawhorn and Joseph Maldonado are vying to be the Libertarian candidate for governor.

In 2016, Libertarians allowed registered Independents to vote in their primaries.
