Lucas, Mullin Praise Passage of Farm Bill

The 2018 Farm Bill was narrowly passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday. It is an $867 billion dollar package which has won the approval of Congressmen Frank Lucas and Markwayne Mullin.

“I am pleased my colleagues in the House have acted to pass the 2018 Farm Bill,” said Lucas. “This legislation underscores the importance of protecting the farm safety net for producers and ensuring our fellow citizens have access to a safe and affordable food supply. The 2018 Farm Bill builds upon the success of the 2014 Farm Bill and, in this environment of low commodity prices, gives producers greater economic certainty to plan for the future.”

Lucas is the chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry. The committee worked on the Agricultural and Nutrition Act of 2018 (H.R. 2).

“I’m proud of the work by my colleagues in the House Agriculture Committee in crafting a comprehensive bill. Now, it is crucial that the Senate passes a Farm Bill so that a final product can be developed in conference committee,” Lucas added.

“Home to over 77,000 farms on 34 million acres, Oklahoma plays an important role in food production for the country and the world,” said Mullin.  “The 2018 farm bill strengthens programs that are vital to Oklahoma’s farmers, such as crop insurance and access to credit in difficult times.  Nationwide, our farmers need certainty and security.  This bill offers our agriculture community the tools they need for peace of mind and long-term success.  I am proud to support the 2018 farm bill on behalf of Oklahoma’s farmers so they can continue on their good work feeding billions.”

Mullin also supports the new work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“Additionally, the 2018 farm bill makes huge strides to strengthen our workforce by implementing work requirements for able-bodied adults currently receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.  The American dream is built on the opportunity to earn an honest wage and provide for one’s family.  With over 6.7 million job openings and a booming economy, there is no better time than now to encourage work-capable individuals to start paving their way to a bright future.  I am pleased to see the House include practical work requirements in this year’s farm bill,” Mullin said.
