House Delegation Splits on Continuing Resolution

The stop gap measure to prevent the federal government from shutting down over stalled budget talks splits the vote among Oklahoma’s U.S. House members. Congressman Tom Cole and Congresswoman Kendra Horn voted for the continuing resolution (CR) saying that it kept programs going that if they stopped would hurt people. Congressmen Frank Lucas, Markwayne Mullin and Kevin Hern voted against the CR. The vote was 231 to 192.

The CR, if approved by the U.S. Senate and President Trump, would keep government running through December 20.

Horn says the measure keeps health care clinics open and continues to urge Congress to pass a full budget.

“One of my top priorities is fighting to make sure Oklahomans have affordable access to health care,” said Congresswoman Horn. “While today’s legislation is not perfect, it does provide critical funding for community health centers and clinics to keep their doors open. I have urged congressional leadership to pass a full budget funding the government and providing our businesses and health care providers with the certainty they need. Finding common ground takes hard work, and over the coming weeks, I will continue to push leadership on both sides of the aisle to pass long-term funding legislation rather than more short-term stop-gap measures. It is time for Congress to do its job and fund the government.”

Before the vote took place, Cole made a speech about the short term measure keeping services going, but says Congress is neglecting its primary duty of passing a budget.
