Fetal Heartbeat Bill Heads to Senate Floor

Senator Paul Scott’s Senate Bill 1859 passed out of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Monday giving the fetal heartbeat bill a chance to be heard by the full Senate. SB 1859 would prohibit physicians from performing an abortion if a heartbeat or brainwaves can be detected at six weeks into the pregnancy.

“Oklahoma is a strong pro-life state, but we can do more to protect innocent lives. This is a simple, uniform way to medically determine when life begins while holding physicians accountable for recognizing that fact,” Scott said. “Physicians take an oath to protect life, and any found in violation of this law would not be able to practice medicine in Oklahoma.”

Under this bill, a physician who does perform an abortion after a heartbeat or brainwave has been detected would permanently loose his or her license to practice in Oklahoma.
