Hunter Proposes Federal Legislation to Address McGirt Decision

Attorney General Mike Hunter is calling for Congress to pass a law which would allow the state of Oklahoma to compact with Tribal Nations on criminal justice issues.

Tulsa World’s Randy Krehbiel writes it got a mixed reception from tribal leaders and Governor Stitt.

Hunter is hoping Congress would craft a law to open the door for Oklahoma law enforcement and the judicial system to handle criminal jurisdiction on established reservation lands. That was the practice before the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt v. Oklahoma decision that the Muscogee Creek Reservation was never de-established by Congress.
