Stitt Calls for McGirt Related Negotiations with Tribes

Governor Kevin Stitt wants the state’s Tribal nations to come to the negotiating table over issues created because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt v. Oklahoma decision. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s reservation was never dissolved, so it has criminal jurisdiction within those boundaries. It has shifted criminal cases from state district courts to the Northern and Eastern Federal Districts. Some speculate the ruling could be extended to all Five Tribes and involve civil and taxation issues, as well.

Tulsa World’s Randy Krehbiel writes the Tribes are responding cautiously. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation told the paper “talks of negotiation would be premature without the in-depth conversations that are necessary to move forward.”
