House Passes Ban on Transgender Women in Female Sports

A “shucked” bill revived legislation which bans transgender girls and women from female sports in Oklahoma won House approval on Monday by a vote of 73 to 19. Senate Bill 2 was presented by Representative Toni Hasenbeck.

Tulsa World’s Randy Krehbiel writes that many Republicans argued for the bill on the basis of “fair play” in sports, while Democrats contend SB 2 furthers a culture war.

Shucking a bill is the legislative practice of stripping a bill of its original language and inserting completely new language. The original measure making way for the transgender ban in sports was stalled in the Senate.

It is encouraging to see common sense prevail in the legislature. Rep. Hasenbeck fought her corner well, and deserves congratulations.
