Lankford, Inhofe Vote to Oppose “For the People Act”

The expansive federal voting reform bill, the “For the People Act” will not make it to debate on the U.S. Senate floor. U.S. Senators Jim Inhofe and James Lankford joined fellow Senate Republicans in voting against advancing S. 2093, also known as S.1/H.R. 1.

Lankford has been outspoken since January against the bill which would federalize state elections.

“Our election system should provide every American with the confidence that their vote is counted and encourage every American to vote,” said Lankford. “Americans support voter ID laws. They do not want publicly funded campaigns and do not support ballot harvesting with third-party collection of ballots. When both the ACLU and the Heritage Foundation oppose a bill, it is clear it does not represent American values. We want reliable election systems with results that can be verified and checked. We need to build trust in our election system. I strongly opposed S.1 because it makes cheating easy and verifying elections impossible. It is not the right direction for our nation.”

Inhofe backs Lankford’s sentiment saying it would undermine the integrity of Oklahoma’s elections.

“Today, Senate Democrats did exactly what we knew they would—they forced a vote on their partisan, misnamed ‘For the People Act.’ While Oklahoma’s elections are fair, safe and secure, this bill would upend important safeguards our state has in place while also nationalizing our elections and giving Washington unprecedented and unconstitutional power over state and local governments. This bill is bad for Oklahoma and I will not stand for it,” said Inhofe.
