Bennington Superintendent Says She’ll Seek Top State Educator Seat

Oklahoma Democratic Party

Longtime Oklahoma Educator and Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration (CCOSA) member Donna Anderson today announced her candidacy for State Superintendent of Schools in 2014. Anderson, who has more than 19 years of experience as an educator, is currently the superintendent of Bennington Public Schools.

“As someone who has worked in public education my entire life – at schools, with parents, children and teachers – I truly understand what our public education system needs,” Democrat Anderson said. “I believe that parents and educators should be the driving force behind public education. If elected, my goal asthe state superintendent will be to focus education discussion and policy on what’s best for Oklahoma students.”

Anderson said she believes that children should come first, and will place a large focus on creating increased accountability, assessment reform and financial stability for Oklahoma’s public schools. She believes local schools, parents, and educators should have more say in what is occurring in their community’s education system.

“Currently in Oklahoma, we are trying to make our schools and students into something they are not,” Anderson said.  “The methods currently being promoted have no research based success. We do not need to model education after any other state. We need to be Oklahomans who do the hard work to find our path to success, not run frantically toward unproven methods because of a political agenda.”

Anderson began her education career in 1992 teaching middle school students in the classroom. She then worked as a parent educator for Oklahoma Parents as Teachers (OPAT) before starting the Sac and Fox Nation Juvenile Detention Center. The past 15 years, Donna has worked in education administration serving as director of alternative education, assistant principal, principal and superintendent.

Growing up, Anderson attended Oklahoma City schools until her junior year, and graduated from Kingston High School. She holds degrees from Northwestern University and East Central University. Donna has worked in many areas of the state including the Panhandle, Prague, Grove, Porter, Kingston, and Bennington. Anderson’s husband, Charlie Anderson, is also an educator at Kingston Public Schools. The two have four children who all attended public schools in Oklahoma.

    Like the release notice says…Demo.

What difference does that make? At least, let’s listen to her ideas. However, there is nothing wrong with taking ideas from other states as long as they’re good ideas.

Her program calls for the return to the status quo ante. Yeah, that sure worked well.

Sorry I missed where the announcement came from…. usually it’s from the candidate NOT a political party! Personally, I’m sick of the status quo, those who think more money, regulations, and unfunded mandates will solve our educational problems. So, if she thinks that is the solution, I’m pretty sure she isn’t the answer.

By the way, Bennington School District – the school district she runs – got a C under the new grading system. She sure sounds like someone we want to run the State Department of Education. She will succeed in bringing all the other school districts down to a C. And if we’re dumb enough to elect her, we deserve it.
