Governor Kevin Stitt’s veto of Senate Bill 102 was overridden by the Legislature on Wednesday. That bill makes changes to the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System which increases benefits and raises the employer and employee contributions to the system.
In his veto statement, Stitt said that the “contributions will not be enough to offset the cost of the increased benefit. This will cause the System’s funded ratio to meaningfully decline-even with the assumption of the System meeting its return target in the future.”
The Senate’s override vote tally was 35 to nine. In the House the override won by a margin of 83 to four.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond thanked the Legislature for the override.
“I want to commend the legislators who overrode the Governor’s veto of SB 102. By stepping up for law enforcement, lawmakers are strengthening the recruitment and retention of police officers who will help ensure secure communities. I am proud to stand with the men and women who risk their lives to protect our families, and I am thankful for the Legislature’s decisive action,” said Drummond.
