Oklahoma Senator Darrell Weaver has been named Outstanding Senate Legislator by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his work to toughen the state’s impaired driving laws during the 2025 legislative session.
Weaver, who chairs the Senate Public Safety Committee, received the award for authoring Senate Bill 54, legislation that expands the definition of aggravated DUI and increases penalties aimed at preventing repeat offenses.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving,” Weaver said. “This recognition is not mine alone, but it represents the collective effort of advocates, families, law enforcement, and lawmakers in our state who are committed to protecting the public and preventing senseless tragedies on our roadways.”
The new law, which takes effect Nov. 1, classifies certain combined offenses as felonies when they occur alongside impaired driving. Those include causing a crash, eluding police, speeding in a school zone, or having a minor in the vehicle while under the influence.
“Our laws must fully address the gravity of driving under the influence,” Weaver said. “I appreciate MADD and everyone who supported this effort to build on Oklahoma’s public safety initiatives.”
