Shannon Leads GOP Field in Lt. Governor Race in New Poll

A new Sooner Survey poll finds former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon leading the Republican primary field for Lieutenant Governor with 39 percent support in a five-way contest.

The poll, released Feb. 12 by Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates, shows Shannon ahead of State Auditor Cindy Byrd by 16 points. Byrd registers 23 percent, while 27 percent of voters remain undecided. The three other candidates each poll in the single digits.

According to the survey, Shannon benefits from higher name recognition and strong support among core conservative voters. His name identification stands at 68 percent overall and rises to 75 percent among voters who have participated in at least four of the last five Republican primaries.

Shannon’s favorability rating is 34 percent favorable to 10 percent unfavorable. The poll shows he performs especially well among self-identified very conservative voters, Trump Republicans and frequent Fox News viewers.

Byrd’s overall favorability stands at 21 percent favorable to 8 percent unfavorable, with stronger support among moderate Republicans.

Regionally, Shannon posts some of his strongest numbers in western Oklahoma, including the southwest around his hometown of Lawton and in the rural northwest.

The survey was conducted January 26 through 30 among 600 Republican primary voters statewide. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percent.

The Republican primary for Lieutenant Governor is four months away.
