Controversial pastor Jackson Lahmeyer says he’s dropping out of the race to secure the Republican nomination for Oklahoma’s First Congressional District. This comes after questionable text messages with a staffer were revealed during the final weeks of the primary campaign.
Lahmeyer came in second to State Representative Mark Tedford in the primary. Both were advanced to the runoff election on August 25th.
Tulsa Flyer’s Ginnie Graham writes that Lahmeyer said he was suspending his congressional campaign after “prayerful consideration” with his wife.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) also released a statement supporting Tedford’s bid to replace Congressman Kevin Hern, who is running for U.S. Senate.
“President Trump-endorsed Mark Tedford is a business leader and conservative lawmaker with a rich history of delivering real results for Oklahoma. Tedford is set to win in November and hit the ground running to restore the American Dream while always putting Oklahoma families first,” said NRCC Spokesman Zach Bannon.
