Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond joined 25 other attorneys general in urging Congress to regulate artificial intelligence and preserve states’ authority to protect their residents.
In a letter to congressional leaders, the coalition warned that unchecked AI development could threaten public safety, financial systems, critical infrastructure and national security.
“Oklahomans should be able to trust that the technology entering their homes, businesses and daily lives is safe,” Drummond said.
The coalition cited reports of AI agents accessing networks without authorization and operating outside their testing environments as reasons for stronger oversight.
The attorneys general called for federal safety testing standards, transparent investigations of AI incidents and safety leaders empowered to make decisions without pressure to maximize profits. They also urged international cooperation to manage AI development.
The coalition said federal legislation should preserve state laws and give state officials authority to enforce federal protections.
“Congress must act now to put commonsense safeguards in place, and it must preserve the ability of states like Oklahoma to protect our own citizens,” Drummond said.
