Drummond Joins Lawsuit Over Alleged Dollar General Overcharges

Attorney General Gentner Drummond has joined the Federal Trade Commission and 19 other state attorneys general in suing Dollar General over allegations that customers paid more at checkout than prices displayed on shelves, tags and advertisements.

The complaint alleges the retailer repeatedly mislabeled prices and overcharged customers for years, costing consumers millions of dollars. It also alleges the company knew about the problem but failed to adequately address it.

“Hardworking Oklahomans should not have to worry about being overcharged for everyday necessities,” Drummond said. “Companies have a responsibility to be honest about their prices. I will always fight to protect Oklahomans and ensure that consumers are treated fairly.”

According to the complaint, Dollar General received tens of thousands of complaints from customers nationwide who said the company did not honor advertised prices. The FTC and states contend that safeguards against overcharging were insufficient and that the problem affected thousands of stores.

Dollar General operates more than 21,000 stores nationwide and promotes itself as a lower-priced alternative to larger discount retailers.

The lawsuit alleges violations of federal and state consumer protection laws.
