Inhofe Sides with Esper on Navy Secretary Resignation

U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Senator Jim Inhofe sides with Defense Secretary Mark Esper in forcing Navy Secretary Richard Spencer to resign.

Esper learned that Spencer had taken a plan to address Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher’s future. Gallagher was accused of war crimes in the death of an ISIS militant. Gallagher was not convicted of killing the militant, but was for posing with the body. His rank was left in question.

Spencer offered President Trump a plan without first going to Esper. Esper on Sunday asked for Spencer’s resignation because he had lost “trust and confidence.”

Inhofe agrees with the move.

“Today, Secretary Esper notified me that he has asked for Secretary Spencer’s resignation. Both Secretary Esper and President Trump deserve to have a leadership team who has their trust and confidence.

“It is no secret that I had my own disagreements with Secretary Spencer over the management of specific Navy programs, and I look forward to receiving and considering a nomination for the next Secretary of the Navy as soon as possible,” said Inhofe.
