Thompson Takes Aim at State Agency Spending Reforms

Senate Appropriations Chair Roger Thompson wants to modernize the way state agencies spend taxpayer money by reforming the Oklahoma Central Purchasing Act. Senate Bill 1422 would update agency spending limits to reflect current prices of the goods and services those agencies need.

Thompson says the reforms will increase the accountability of how agencies spend money.

“These reforms will not only clarify language within the statute and get rid of unnecessary red tape, but this will also allow for increased training of purchasing officers and more in-depth audits of agency spending,” Thompson said.  “This bill is a needed measure that will bring more flexibility to the day-to-day operations of our agencies, while still maintaining accountability and oversight that is needed in government on any level.”

Thompson says the Central Purchasing Act has not had a comprehensive review since 1998, even though lawmakers have made minor changes over the years.
