State Primary Election Day

From 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. polls are open for Oklahoma voters to decide candidates who will move forward, as well as, the fate of State Question 802. The Tuesday State Primary Election will have something for everyone to vote on.

State Question 802 is the initiative asking voters to expand Medicaid in Oklahoma. Proponents say taxpayers are already giving the money to the federal government, and Oklahoma should get some of it to cover health care. Opponents are worried by putting Medicaid expansion into the state constitution, there will be little or no flexibility if Congress should change the terms of the program.

The Republicans and Democrats have primaries for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe. Many of the Congressional seats also have primaries. There is a Republican primary for Corporation Commission, the seat currently held by Commissioner Todd Hiett. There are several legislative and county elections, as well.

The Republican and Libertarian primaries are closed to those registered as members of those parties. The Democrats allow Independent voters to participate in its primaries.

The Oklahoma State Election Board says social distancing and other protocols will be in place to help protect poll workers and voters from possible spread of COVID-19. The State Election Board also strongly recommends wearing a mask to your polling place.
