While not all Americans are called to public service, each of us has a role to play in shaping and determining the direction of our country and our communities. With Election Day right around the corner and absentee voting already underway, I encourage you to exercise your precious right to vote and have a say in choosing who will represent you locally and nationally.
When our Founding Fathers first dreamed what the United States of America could be and built a democratic framework for our republic to succeed, their aim was not only to protect the rights of citizens but to encourage nationwide participation in government. That special ability to participate in government must never be taken for granted. Indeed, throughout our history, hundreds of thousands have given their lives to protect our way of life and preserve our unique freedoms, including the right to vote. The least we can do is respect their courage and let our voices be heard when the opportunity comes.
Since our nation was founded nearly 245 years ago, the United States has confronted many challenges, and the unrelenting hardships experienced this year have been particularly difficult and numerous. However, there is no obstacle too tough for Americans to overcome when we face it together. While it’s easy to get swept up in the partisan rhetoric that often runs rampant during election season, I caution you not to demonize your fellow Americans, just because you disagree politically. Especially as we seek an end to the coronavirus crisis and race to restore our way of life, we need each other more than ever.
Remember, even on our very worst day, we are still the greatest nation on earth with an even brighter future ahead. Whatever your political persuasion or affiliation, I encourage you to research candidates and cast your ballot on or before Tuesday, November 3. When you express your opinion at the polls, you validate the sacrifice of those who have fought to preserve our freedom throughout history and make America a more perfect union. And whether your desired candidate wins or loses, you will have the satisfaction knowing you participated in our government the way our Founding Fathers intended.
