Lankford Remains on Tulsa Race Massacre Commission

Extending an olive branch after deep discussions, the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Commission is not asking U.S. Senator James Lankford to step down. He initially helped protest the 2020 presidential election during the Electoral College certification in the U.S. Senate, which set off a firestorm among Commission members.

Tulsa World’s Randy Krehbiel writes the Commission released a statement on Monday that said after much consideration it would accept Lankford’s apology because its mission is reconciliation and understanding.

Members of the Commission did call for Lankford to step down after the election protest which was interrupted by the Capitol riots on January 6. Lankford announced he has changed his mind on objecting to the election, later saying he did not realize how it affected Black Oklahomans. The Commission’s statement notes that its decision was not a unanimous one, instead it was a consensus.
