Two bills have made it past the Oklahoma House which helps Oklahoma National Guard members with tuition if they attend an Oklahoma public college or university.
Senate Bill 1416 grants in-state residency for higher-educational purposes only for Guard members serving in the Oklahoma National Guard, but may not be residents.
Senate Bill 1418 updates the Oklahoma National Guard Education Assistance Act to cover both tuition and fees for state Guard members.
Representative Nicole Miller is the House author of the measures.
“This legislation allows us a way to honor and support the men and women who serve us in our Oklahoma National Guard by providing greater access for them to attain a college education while here in our state,” Miller said. “This is a vital component of our recruitment and retention efforts for this indispensable part of our military. In addition, this revolving fund will help us give some relief to the colleges and universities that willingly absorb the bulk of the cost of this program.”
Both bills now head to the governor’s desk.
