Date Set for Adult Use Marijuana State Question Election

Governor Kevin Stitt set March 7, 2023, as the date voters will decide State Question 820 which would set up an adult use cannabis program commonly referred to as recreational marijuana.

Supporters of SQ 820 successfully collected enough signatures to have voters decide the issue. However, a new process employed by the Oklahoma Secretary of State’s office delayed the confirmation of signatures past a deadline to begin printing ballots. A lawsuit was filed to get the question on the November 8 General Election ballot, but the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled it was too late.

The measure would be a state statute, not a constitutional amendment much like State Question 788 which set up Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program.

Stitt also named Adria Berry as the executive director of the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) when it becomes a standalone agency on November 1, 2022. The Legislature passed a law to separate it from the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Berry has been on the job as OMMA director since August 2021.
