House Republicans Reveal Education Agenda

The House Republicans, lead by Speaker Charles McCall, announced their $500 million education agenda on Thursday. The plan features an across the board $2,500 teacher pay increase, $300 million to increase per-pupil expenditures, and a tax credit for those who choose to send their children to private school or home school them.

The tax credit in the House Republicans plan is counter to school vouchers or education savings accounts. The private school tax credit would be $5,000. The home school tax credit would be set at $2,500. Parents would have to retain receipts to prove they are spending the money on private school or home-schooling needs before they could access the credit.

Every public school district would get a piece of the $300 million. It could be used for support staff raises or other educational needs at the discretion of the local districts.
