Walters Voices Concern over State Colleges “Ideology”

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters raised his concern about sending Oklahoma students to state colleges and universities during Thursday’s State Board of Education meeting. His statement earned a rebuke from three Oklahoma House members who oversee education committees.

Tulsa World’s Andrea Eger writes Walters said that he has great concerns about state universities being more focused on ideology rather than getting students ready for the workforce. He questioned whether the state should be sending students to Oklahoma colleges and universities.

Representative Rhonda Baker, Representative Mark McBride, and Representative Anthony Moore issued a joint statement after the meeting noting that Walters, even in his capacity as secretary of education, does not have true authority over higher education.

At the same meeting, Walters announced the formation of blue-ribbon committees to study and report on religious practices throughout public education and how to make schools more modern and effective for teachers.
