“Orange Alert” System Signed into Law

With a stroke of a pen, Governor Kevin Stitt signed House Bill 1546 into law on Friday, creating a new “Orange Alert” system for prisons.

The new law directors the Oklahoma Department of Corrections to create and maintain a communication system within each correctional facility’s area. It will alert those who have subscribed to the system if an inmate has escaped the facility. Residents within a forty-mile radius will be allowed to subscribe to that prison’s orange alert system.

One a facility’s orange alert system is operational, a notice will be printed in a newspaper of record within the county.

HB 1546 passed by both chambers unanimously.

It goes into effect on November 1, 2023.
