Audit Questions State Spending of Millions in Pandemic Federal Relief Aid Money

State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd Tuesday issued an audit of the State of Oklahoma’s spending of millions in pandemic federal aid money, questioning approximately $29 million. She says the state dropped the ball on compliance and oversight.

Tulsa World’s Barbara Hoberock writes the audit covers expenditures made during state fiscal year 2021.

Byrd’s audit found $12.2 million in questionable costs from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020 and found $1.7 million in misspent funds through the Bridge the Gap program funded by the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER).

If the federal government agrees with Byrd’s findings, it could mean the state of Oklahoma will have to repay that money.
