OICA, Oklahoma Farm Bureau Hold Capitol Camp

More than 70 4-H and FFA students from across Oklahoma gathered at the Oklahoma Capitol this week for the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau’s Capitol Camp. It is a program which gives students a chance to experience the legislative process up close.

OICA CEO Joe Dorman is a former Oklahoma legislator and assists the students in drafting legislation and managing the debate over bills. The students also elect a governor and a speaker of the house as part of the process.

Last year’s camp resulted in real legislation being passed this session. Representative Anthony Moore took up the idea of a voluntary system to alert people living within a 40-mile radius of a prison that an inmate escaped and helped make it into law. The idea was drafted by one of last year’s camp participants.
