10th Circuit Court Rejects Tulsa’s Traffic Ticket of Choctaw Man

A new ruling by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals three judge panel has overturned a lower court’s ruling that the city of Tulsa could issue a ticket to a Choctaw man.

Tulsa World’s Curtis Killman writes the ruling marks an apparent expansion of the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt ruling. That changed the nature of law enforcement and criminal jurisdiction throughout much of eastern Oklahoma.

The City of Tulsa is reviewing the decision before deciding on a possible appeal.

Governor Kevin Stitt panned the 10th Circuit’s decisions, while several tribal leaders praised it as a recognition of their sovereignty.
