Legislative Leaders Content Compact Renewal within Powers

In their filing with the Oklahoma Supreme Court this week, House Speaker Charles McCall and Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat content the Legislature does have the authority to renew tribal compacts without the governor. Governor Kevin Stitt has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block two new laws that would extent compacts involving tobacco and license tags.

The Oklahoman’s Molly Young writes the filing says Stitt is trying to stop the extensions because of his “personal vitriol toward tribal nations.”

Several major tribes and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond have sided with McCall and Treat in this case.

Stitt now has an opportunity to respond to the filing.
